Three unions have announced plans to begin industrial action on August 9, 2024, if the Ministry of Finance does not authorize the payment of agreed allowances by August 8.

The unions involved are the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Federation of Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC).

These unions have raised concerns over the Finance Ministry’s delay in issuing a letter to authorize the payment of the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) and other related allowances.

In a statement dated Monday, August 5, the unions issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding that the allowances be paid by August 8, or they would proceed with a strike the following day.

They emphasized the urgency of the situation, expressing frustration with the government’s inaction. The unions accused the government of using underhanded tactics to withhold their rightful dues.

They stressed that their patience had run out and that they were prepared to take action to ensure their demands were met.

The unions reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of their members, urging the government to act swiftly to prevent any disruption.

They called on the Ministry of Finance to fulfill its obligations and avert the impending strike.

“The Unions have given the government (Ministry) up to the close of work on Thursday, August 8, to release the letter. Failure to do so will result in the Unions being forced to take industrial action on the 9th of August 2024. The SSA-UoG, FUSSAG, and TEWU (TUC) are committed to fighting for the rights of their members and will not rest until justice is served.”

“The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has done what is needed by writing to the Ministry of Finance for payment to be effected. We have tried to engage the Ministry on several occasions to release a letter to that effect so our members could be paid, but the Ministry has refused,” an excerpt of their statement said.

Ghanaian actor and movie producer, Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, expressed his hope that students from his school will thrive and become leaders in Ghana and beyond.

Speaking at the speech and prize-giving day of Great Minds International School in Ahenkro, Ashanti Region, Lil Win highlighted his dedication to philanthropy and making a positive impact on society, despite facing numerous accusations.

He emphasized the importance of making education accessible to everyone as a way to achieve this goal.

“I would be glad to learn during my old age that a parliamentarian had their education from my school,” LilWin remarked.

He added, “Good deeds are rewarded. Years from now, when I am older, I want to hear that an MP received their education from the school I built. May God bless everyone, especially those who enrolled their children in my school.

“Due to the overflow of students in my school, I have built another school two minutes away from the first building to accommodate more students,” LilWin said.

The actor also addressed what he believes to be an intentional effort to depict him as arrogant and disrespectful, particularly following a recent accident.

“With the recent issue that happened to me, people called me proud and disrespectful, yet I have never fought with anyone or stolen from anyone in Ghana before. I can’t tell if it’s because of the school I built, the house I live in, or the car I drive. There is no reason for me to intentionally orchestrate an accident that could kill me,” Lil Win explained.

Ghana is set to send teachers to Jamaica as part of a collaborative effort to address a significant shortage of educators in the island’s public school system.

This initiative comes in response to the Jamaican Ministry of Education and Youth’s intensified efforts to recruit overseas teachers to fill vacant positions.

Permanent Secretary Dr. Kasan Troupe announced that both Ghana and the Philippines have expressed strong interest in supplying educators to Jamaica.

Preliminary discussions have already occurred between the Ghanaian ambassador and the Jamaican Education Ministry.

A delegation from Ghana is expected to visit Jamaica during the week of August 11 to finalize the arrangements.

“What is interesting with this discussion, colleagues, is that they (the teachers) are interested in working for the same emoluments as we offer to our teachers in Jamaica,” Dr. Troupe stated.

Dr. Troupe noted that what’s particularly noteworthy about this collaboration is that the Ghanaian teachers are willing to work for the same salaries as local Jamaican educators.

She also emphasized the positive impact of this development, mentioning that some volunteers have expressed interest in helping address the shortage, especially in mathematics and the sciences.

These Ghanaian teachers have reportedly agreed to work for the same compensation as their Jamaican counterparts, which Dr. Troupe described as a significant advancement.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Jamaican government to ensure that schools are fully staffed for the upcoming academic year.

Dr. Troupe stressed that while international recruitment efforts are ongoing, Jamaican schools are not being mandated to hire foreign teachers but are being given additional options to ensure sufficient staffing.

“Our responsibility as a ministry is to provide options for our principals… We are not forcing, but our schools must have options as they try to make sure their staff members are in place for the new academic year,” she explained.

This collaboration between Ghana and Jamaica underscores a proactive approach to addressing educational challenges and ensuring that students receive a quality education despite the current shortage of educators.

The family of Lois Koranteng, a KNUST graduate found dead under mysterious circumstances at a hotel in Takoradi, has made serious allegations against the Ghana Police Service and the hotel management. They accuse the police and the hotel of mishandling the investigation and misleading the public. The family claims the police lied about performing the autopsy on June 8th, the day Lois was found dead, insisting it was actually conducted on June 11th and demanding an explanation for this discrepancy.

According to the family, the police reported finding no blood stains on Lois, yet they possess photographic evidence suggesting otherwise, including a “reddish liquid” from her nose. They criticize the police for poor communication and transparency, noting that aside from a visit meant to cover up investigative flaws, there have been no updates or reassurances about the ongoing investigation.

Additionally, the family states the police have been unable to unlock Lois’s phone, which they believe is crucial for understanding the events leading to her death.

The hotel management is also under scrutiny. The family disputes the hotel’s claim that their security cameras were not working at the time of Lois’s death, presenting evidence to the contrary. They question why the hotel dismissed its management staff and replaced the security cameras three days after the incident. Furthermore, they allege that the hotel lied about the pool guard’s whereabouts on June 7th and is preventing a specific female staff member from discussing the incident. The hotel has also reportedly pressured the family to remove social media posts addressing their concerns.

The family also raises issues with Lois’s employer, claiming the company rushed to obtain her laptop password from them just hours after her death, which they find suspicious. They have a voice recording of this request and demand transparency from the company.

The family has shared some of their evidence and threatened to release more if satisfactory explanations are not provided by the implicated parties.

1. Ghana Police Service why did you choose to lie to Ghanaians infact the whole world that you did the autopsy on 8th June which means the same day Lois was found dead in the pool meanwhile it was done on 11th June 2024. Can you come out and explain to Ghanaians?

2. Why did you also lied that there were no blood stains found on Lois when she was found dead in the pool. I have pictures to prove.

Can you come out and explain if the “reddish liquid” which was from her nose was palm oil or cloth die.

2. Before and after your “planned” visit to the family just to cover the shame of your dilettante efforts concerning Lois mysterious death you have never called, emailed or texted the family of any assurance or briefed us about your investigation you claim you are doing.

3. Should I tell Ghanaians that your “cyber or IT gurus policemen have failed to unlock Lois phone till date?

4. Tell Ghanaians the relationship you have with Icon Energy .

@chrislord palace hotel, takoradi

1. Why did you lied that your cameras were not functioning. I have evidence to prove

2. Why did you sack all your managing staff after the Lois death .

3. Why did you replace the cameras at the hotel 3days after Lois mysterious death in your hotel?

4. Why did you lied to the family that the pool guard had traveled on 7th June meanwhile it’s your security man who doubles as life guard and he was present on duty at the said date.

5. Why are you preventing that “female staff” name withheld from speaking to third parties?

6. Why are you pressuring the family to pull down the post instead of using the same energy to tell the whole Ghana the truth.

Icon Energy

1. Why were you so much in haste to get Lois laptop password from the family few hours after her death? Can you come out and tell Ghanaians your interest. I have your voice recording to that.

I have told you to do the needful or I will continue to expose you too.

Attached are few of my evidences. I will bring all out if any of the parties mentioned above deny.

The dreams of 12 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates of obtaining their first academic certificate nearly turned into a nightmare.

They were almost barred from writing the first paper on Monday at the Ho Kabore JHS Centre for wearing slippers instead of the prescribed cross-sandals.

To their surprise, the unsuspecting pupils were reprimanded on arrival at the examination centre and instructed to go home after the English paper and come back better dressed for the Religious and Moral Education (RME) paper in the afternoon.

However, the Municipal Director of Education, Dr Esther Adzo Yeboah-Adzima, who happened to be at the centre to wish the candidates well, stepped in to pardon the victims and extended the grace period to Tuesday, reports Graphic Online’s Alberto Mario Noretti from Ho.

“The school uniform does not go with slippers,” Dr Yeboah-Adzima explained.

She maintained that the examination candidates should understand that they were not yet school leavers who could dress anyhow without consideration for school regulations, especially concerning their appearance.

That drama was followed by another interesting spectacle when all the 260 candidates at the centre were only allowed to enter their respective examination rooms after taking off the covers of their pens.

“This is because last year some candidates stuck pieces of paper with answers on them into the pen covers, and we do not want that to happen again,” said the centre’s supervisor, Makafui Doe Ama Fiagbe.

The candidates were also searched thoroughly to prevent them from entering the examination rooms with any foreign material. In spite of that, Ms Fiagbe said the examination took off smoothly without any hitch.

Visually-impaired

Meanwhile, 36 visually-impaired BECE pupils were among the 29,316 candidates in the Volta Region, where girls outnumber boys in the week-long examination. From public schools, the candidates include 12,316 girls and 12,204 boys, while candidates from private schools are made up of 2,466 girls and 12,204 boys.

The Volta Regional Director of Education, Francis Yaw Agbemadi, disclosed this to the Daily Graphic in Ho before the commencement of the BECE at the various centres yesterday.
He said the visually-impaired candidates comprised 14 boys and 22 girls.

The BECE, Mr Agbemadi said, was taking place at 115 centres in the region, with a total of 977 invigilators and 115 centre supervisors. There were no reported incidents at any of the centres in the municipality at the time of filing this report.

Reports reaching Ho from the North Tongu District, which is still recovering from the ravages of last year’s floods, indicated that the BECE took off in eight centres as expected.

The District Director of Education, Isabella Ayimey, who spoke to the Daily Graphic on the phone from Mepe, said 2,046 candidates from 82 schools wrote the paper.

She said there were three visually-impaired boys among the candidates. At the Ho-Kpodzi E.P. JHS ‘D’ Centre, the paper started at 9 a.m. as scheduled, with 321 candidates.

The centre supervisor, Selorm Adjei, said the 321 candidates were made up of 177 girls and 144 boys. He said unlike last year, there were no pregnant girls among the candidates.

Accra

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has given assurance that adequate measures have been put in place to reduce malpractices and any infractions that can mar this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), Joshua Bediako Koomson reports.

Prior to the exam, the Director General of the GES, Dr Eric Nkansah, said massive sensitisation exercises were organised in most of the basic schools across the country where students were advised to refrain from examination malpractice.

In addition, he said the students were made aware of the punitive measures put in place for those who would be found culpable of examination malpractice.

“Fortunately, this year, you saw the President deliver a message to the candidates and admonished them to eschew any form of malpractice.

It can’t get any better than this. It appears that almost everyone has come to understand examination malpractice is not the way to go,” he said. Dr Nkansah said this when he, together with some officials from the GES, carried out a monitoring exercise at some centres in Accra yesterday to ascertain the reality on the ground.

The centres visited were Osu Presby Girls Junior High School (JHS), Private Odartey Lamptey JHS and Accra High School. At each examination centre, the officials were updated on the number of students who were taking the exams, absentees, security issues and the number of registered schools.

Encouragement

Speaking to journalists after the inspection, Dr Nkansah wished the candidates well and encouraged them to aim at attaining higher grades. “You have spent many years in school to learn and now is the time for you to come and show what you have learnt. Believe in your abilities and don’t ask anybody for help because there is no assurance that what the person is telling you is the correct answer,” he said.

Koforidua

From the Eastern Regional capital, Koforidua, Haruna Yussif Wunpini reports that 53,262 pupils are taking part in the examination across the region, of which 44,808 are from the public schools and 8,456 from private schools at 195 centres across the region.

Also included are 68 pupils of special needs, who have been registered by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to sit the examination.

Out of the 68 pupils, 24 are from the Akropong School for the Blind; 17 from the Demonstration School for the Deaf, Mampong; 16 from the Koforidua School for the Deaf, and 11 from the Kibi School for the Deaf.

The Daily Graphic also visited the Koforidua Secondary Technical School (SECTECH) and the Pentecost Senior High School centres. One of the candidates, Cynthia Acheampong, said she was hopeful of performing credibly to enable her to enter senior high school.

Kumasi

From Kumasi, Kwadwo Baffoe Donkor reports that  9,274 candidates are taking part in the BECE at 35 centres throughout the metropolis. The female candidates outnumbered the males by more than 300, with girls being 4,789 as against 4,485 boys.

Tour

The Metro Director of Education, David Oppong, together with the Chief Executive of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Samuel Pyne, and other officials of the assembly toured some of the centres to wish the candidates well and also assess the progress of the examination.

Some of the centres visited included State Experimental M/A, Kumasi Senior High Technical School, Opoku Ware Senior High School, St. Hubert’s Senior High, and Seminary School.

Advice

In his short address to the candidates, Mr Pyne asked them to remain calm and avoid any examination malpractice but be disciplined and not lose their composure. He wished them well and urged them to ensure that they excel to enable them to benefit from the Free SHS policy.

“Pay attention to instructions and directions from your examination supervisors, and I hope you will pass well to take advantage of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s Free SHS policy after this examination.

This examination marks the beginning of your career,” he said. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Baah also reports from Kumasi that 110,742 were expected to sit for this year’s BECE in the Ashanti Region, comprising 55,175 boys and 55,567 girls,

When the Daily Graphic team visited Centres ‘A’ and ‘B’ at the Kumasi Anglican SHS Examination, where 468 candidates were expected to take the examination, it came to light that two girls from Grace Baptist Preparatory School at Amakom and St Cyprian’s Anglican “B” JHS had failed to turn up.

Joseph Wiafe, the supervisor for Centre ‘A’, told the Daily Graphic that the examination commenced at exactly 9 a.m. without any hitches. “So far, we haven’t had any challenges”, he said, adding that the only mishap was the absence of the two girls.

He said he contacted the two schools but could not get any information regarding their failure to report.

Tamale

Mohammed Fugu reports from Tamale that 33,844 candidates from 777 schools are sitting for this year’s BECE in the Northern Region. The candidates comprise 17,796 boys and 16,048 girls from both private and public JHSs.

At the Northern School of Business (NOBISCO) centres A, B and C, five candidates, made up of four girls and a boy, were absent. The examination officers could not give reasons for their absence.

The Northern Regional Director of GES, Katumi Natogmah Attah, advised the candidates against any form of examination malpractice that could lead to the cancellation of their papers.

Upper East Region

Gilbert Mawuli Agbey reports from Bolgatanga that this year’s BECE commenced smoothly across all centres in the Upper East Region.

The 21,214 candidates taking part in the examination are drawn from 712 public and private basic schools.

Also, 16 hearing-impaired candidates are taking part in the examination in the Talensi District. In the Bolgatanga Municipality, two new examination centres were created at the Bolgatanga Technical University and the Great Victory Academy to reduce the pressure on the existing centres.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga, accompanied by the Municipal Director of Education, Anne Estella Kye-ebo, visited both centres to monitor the examination.

Mr Asanga urged the candidates not to panic but to remain calm and answer all the questions to the best of their ability, saying, “I am optimistic that you have been adequately prepared to excel in the examination.”

Upper West Region

From Wa, Sahada Dramani reports that 14,575 candidates from the Upper West Region are participating in this year’s BECE, comprising 6,937 females and 7,637 males.

In the Wa municipality, 3,972 candidates from 109 schools are participating at 12 centres.

The examination officer, Mr Salifu Kalah Abu, cautioned candidates to avoid examination malpractice and concentrate on what they had learnt so far and be reminded that students were not supposed to pay any money for papers”.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, expressed the hope that this year’s BECE would be the best.

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has warned invigilators against intimidating or harassing students during the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Monday, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, emphasized that invigilators should create a supportive environment for the candidates.

“We want all invigilators to thoroughly search the students to prevent them from bringing in unauthorized materials to cheat. They should also announce the time and ensure all candidates receive the necessary papers and answer booklets,” he said.

However, Mr. Kapi urged invigilators not to stand over a candidate for too long while monitoring.

“They must avoid shouting at the candidates or creating fear. An invigilator should not stand over one candidate for more than a minute, as that would be excessive,” he advised.

The exams will take place from July 8 to July 15, 2024, with 569,095 candidates expected to participate. The exams will be held at 2,123 centers nationwide, with 2,123 supervisors, 1,889 assistant supervisors, and 19,973 invigilators ensuring the smooth running of the process.

In a fierce competition showcasing some of the brightest young minds in the Ashanti region, Kumasi High School has claimed victory for the second time in the LUV FM-PEPSODENT High School Debate. This win marks their return to the top spot following their previous victory two years ago.

In a gripping faceoff with Our Lady of Grace Senior High School (OLAG), Kumasi High once again demonstrated their prowess as formidable competitors in interscholastic debates. The contest revolved around the motion: “The rising cost of living cannot be blamed on the government.”

They toiled and faced a series of defeats but persevered and ultimately succeeded.

This is the resilient story of Tuobodom SHTS, who embodied their school’s motto, “Our suffering will never be in vain,” to secure their first national slot after years of attempts.

Their qualification for the national tournament will be a memorable chapter in the school’s history.

The school triumphed over Notre Dame Girls SHS, Amanten SHS, and Kajaji SHS in a heated contest to secure the second slot for the Bono East region in the national tournament.

Alongside Kintampo SHS, Notre Dame Girls, Techiman SHS, and Akumfi Ameyaw SHS, they will represent the Bono East region in this year’s tournament.

Notre Dame Girls and Akumfi Ameyaw did not win their initial contests but qualified as top runners-up and participated in a second contest after two schools failed to show up.

Given this second chance, the schools put in extra effort to reclaim their spots in the tournament. Akumfi Ameyaw won their contest against Atebubu SHS and Yeji SHS.

Since 2021, Techiman SHS has struggled to secure a national slot after being eliminated at the quarterfinal stage.

The students are now determined to secure a seat at the national championship and proudly represent the Bono East region.

Otiko Afisah Djaba, Executive Director of the Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation, has identified poverty as the main factor driving child prostitution in certain regions of Ghana.

She shared that during her tenure as Gender Minister, traditional leaders informed her that extreme poverty was forcing under-aged girls into prostitution in their communities.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM show, Ms. Djaba explained that these children are resorting to selling themselves to support their families due to the harsh economic conditions.

“No child should be a parent. Why should a ten-year-old be a breadwinner? The girls are becoming very rude because they were now looking after the parents. They go out and comes home very late, and the parent is not able to admonish the child because the child is now paying the rent and the electricity bill. It happens in the Central region because that is where there is a lot of poverty.

“If you look at Ghana, it is the upper east, upper west, northern region, and central region that are most deprived and we have the highest data of poverty in those areas. So, poverty plays a key role in prostitution” she stated.

Ms. Djaba, former Minister of Gender and Social Protection, highlighted the profound impact of poverty on women and girls in Ghana, noting that prostitution often becomes a “first resort” for those struggling to survive.

She emphasized that poverty drives both adults and children into prostitution, leading to serious consequences such as sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies, and violence.

“Because of the ills that come with them, you might get sexually transmitted diseases, or you might get an unwanted pregnancy. You might get raped. The violence that comes from prostitution is totally unacceptable, and we are all aware of all these things that happen, but an older person is more aware than a child who feels that she has no choice.

“Some parents even push the children into prostitution because they feel that is the only way to make ends meet, like pushing your child to go and sell doughnuts and dog chains, and what have you?” Ms. Djaba quizzed.

She stressed the importance of personal responsibility and hard work in combating poverty and firmly rejected prostitution as an acceptable response. Despite the difficulties faced by women and girls in Ghana, Ms. Djaba urged them to make productive choices and maintain their dignity rather than succumbing to the temptation of quick financial gain.
