The Ghana Fire Service National Headquarters was called to the scene, but delays in their response allowed the car to catch fire completely. Although the firefighters eventually managed to put out the flames, the vehicle was left in ruins by the time the fire was extinguished.

The accident and resulting fire were attributed to the driver’s lapse in attention.

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has clarified that the Trafigura judgment debt is not a new issue, stating that no US court has awarded a fresh judgment against Ghana.

This clarification is in response to reports that a District of Columbia Court had ordered the Ghanaian government to pay over $111 million, plus post-judgment interest, following a Motion of Judgement in favour of the Ghana Power Generation Company (GPGC).

In an interview on Accra-based Citi FM on Wednesday, Mr Dame explained, “This award was given way back in 2021, and the government since then has had the obligation to pay, and indeed they have been making efforts to pay.

“It is the failure to exhaust payment which has led to the company seeking enforcement orders in other jurisdictions. It is not the case where there has been a new judgment or a fresh award given by any court or any tribunal anywhere.”

He further dispelled the notion that a new judgment debt had been issued, stating, “The impression that is sought to be created by the publication that I have seen today—another judgment debt, a new judgment debt, US Court awards, there is no US Court which is awarding judgment against the government of Ghana.

Also Read: Sports Ministry paid $2.5m directly to GBC for African Games coverage – Mustapha Ussif

“It is only an enforcement order, and that enforcement order is on account of a failure to pay a judgment debt which accrued way back in January 2021 as a result of an award that was given that time.”

Meanwhile, a US District Court document has revealed a series of errors made by Ghana’s legal team, leading to the inability to challenge the substantial $134 million judgment awarded to Trafigura by English courts.

The dispute, rooted in a power purchase agreement between Trafigura’s subsidiary, GPGC, and the Ghanaian government, saw Ghana unilaterally terminate the agreement in 2018, leading to the hefty judgment.

Despite a clear ruling from the UK tribunal, which ordered Ghana to pay $134,348,661, the government only made partial payments, leaving a significant balance of $111,493,828.92, with interest continuing to accumulate.

The situation was further complicated when Ghana missed the legal timelines to challenge the UK judgment, leaving the country with a substantial financial burden.

IMANI Africa, a policy and education think tank, has expressed serious concerns about the recently launched Royal Ghana Gold Refinery, which was hailed as a groundbreaking development for Ghana’s mining sector.

The refinery was officially opened by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in Accra on August 8, 2024. Dr. Bawumia, who is also the presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), described the refinery as a key investment aimed at enhancing the value of Ghana’s mineral resources. He highlighted that since 2017, the government, under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has prioritized value addition as part of the country’s export strategy, and the refinery represents a significant advancement towards this objective.

Also Read: GNFS saves GH¢94million worth of properties from fire ruins

Originally, the plan was to implement this vision through a joint venture between the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) and Rosy Royal Minerals Limited. PMMC provided the land for the refinery, which faced delays due to COVID-19 but was completed in 2022 after construction began in 2018.

However, IMANI Africa has raised questions about various aspects of the refinery’s establishment. On August 13, 2024, Franklin Cudjoe, the Founder and President of IMANI Africa, took to X to point out discrepancies in the reported cost and ownership of the refinery.

Cudjoe stated that the actual cost of the refinery is $7 million, contrary to the $20 million figure initially reported. He also challenged the claim that this was Ghana’s first gold refinery, noting that the country already has nearly a dozen gold refineries, many of which remain underutilized due to a weak policy framework for local value addition.

Moreover, Cudjoe criticized the depiction of Rosy Royal Minerals as the majority owner of the refinery, alleging that the company lacks experience in gold refining and primarily engages in quarrying. He argued that Rosy Royal could not have funded the supposed $20 million investment.

Instead, he claimed that the refinery is managed by a politician with ties to the ruling party and an independent consultant from New Delhi’s Rare Tech. IMANI Africa’s investigation also revealed that the actual capital of Royal Ghana Gold Limited in Ghana is just over $76,000.

Cudjoe suggested that the real 80% equity holders of the refinery have positioned themselves to secure ongoing revenue from Ghana’s gold with minimal initial investment, possibly relying on the Bank of Ghana to cover their initial costs through working capital.

Is Agyapa Back? IMANI Preliminary Ask

*Update on the Royal Ghana Gold Refinery Saga*

  1. The current phase of the Royal Ghana Gold Refinery costs less than $7.5 million, according to insider sources. The $20 – $25 million bandied about reflects planned future investments in subsequent phases.
  2. The intense international PR was to lead everyone in Ghana to believe that the refinery was built by and is majority owned by an obscure Indian company called “Rosy Royal”. It also aimed to erase from the public mind the existence of bigger, more sophisticated, and currently IDLE, gold refineries in the country. Ghana has almost a dozen gold refineries, by the way. Most of them are financially hamstrung due to a weak policy environment for local value addition.
  3. On the quiet, the Bank of Ghana (the central bank) has been primed to become the equity partner in the new gold refinery and is being asked to invest additional resources for various “enhancements” and trading capital. The Ghanaian state’s equity will thus move from PMMC (the national jeweller) to Bank of Ghana, and the “sleeping partners”, whoever they are, will be able to recoup all their upfront investments (due to the underlying cost inflation). Meaning that the *carried interest* of 20% held by the state is really a “ruse”. In a roundabout way, the Ghanaian state will end up paying for that refinery in full whilst owning just a 20% stake.
  4. At the same time, the government is working hard to redirect assaying and refining business from existing refineries to the new refinery starting with the Bank of Ghana gold purchasing program. Those who think that policy is merely meant to boost Ghana’s reserves should now revise their notes. Reference is also made to our earlier essay on the Gold for Oil deal and the shadowy middlemen involved.
  5. And here is the banger: the *real owners* of the 80% equity stake in the refinery cannot be the company the government has announced: “Rosy Royal”. We have examined its books over the last 6 years, and it never made any $20m+ investment to build a refinery anywhere. In fact, it runs a quarry and knows nothing about refining gold. Rosy Royal has no personnel at the refinery, which is actually chaired by a politician best known as an Eastern Regional Chairman of the ruling party and managed by an independent consultant, the founder of New Delhi’s Rare Tech. *Unsurprisingly, the total capital of Royal Ghana Gold Limited in Ghana itself is just a little over $76,000. *
  6. The “real 80% owners” of the new refinery have put everything skilfully together to secure a permanent stream of cash flows from Ghana’s gold. And they are on course to achieve that with *zero effective upfront investment* (given that the Bank of Ghana will end up covering even their initial investments when it pumps in working capital)

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has saved over GH¢94 million worth of properties from being ravaged by fire between January and July this year.

They are made of residential buildings, industrial properties and other public facilities.

This highlights the GNFS’ improved fire management strategies and the growing efficiency in preventing extensive damage despite its numerous operational challenges.

The cost of damage also decreased significantly from GH¢120 million last year to GH¢89 million this year, indicating a 26.5 per cent reduction.

Statistics

Details of statistics made available to the Daily Graphic indicate that 3,889 fires were recorded from January to July, 2024, as against 3,819 fires for the same period in 2023, leading to a modest rise of about 1.83 per cent.

The modest rise in fire incidents was mainly due to harsh weather conditions and widespread non-compliance with basic fire safety protocols during the first quarter of this year.

Also Read: Ivorians on excursion in Ghana involved in accident at Anomabo

The major causes of the fire during the period were electrical faults from misuse of electricity and appliances, gas leakages from improper use of LPG stoves and cylinders, indiscriminate burning of refuse and bushes, misuse of naked lights such as mosquito coils, candles, lighters and matches, lightning effects as well as deliberate acts.

During the periods, the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions recorded the highest number of fires with 712 incidents, followed by the Eastern Region with 429 fires, and the Central Region with 390 fires. The North East Region had the lowest number with 23 fires.

Decrease

Comparing this year’s data to the same period last year, domestic fires decreased by 3.33 per cent from 1,476 in 2023 to 1,427  last year, with commercial fires also decreasing by 4.86 per cent from 638 last year to 607. Industrial fires decreased by 13.33 per cent from 15 to 13 while vehicular fires decreased by 9.36 per cent from 363 to 329.

Bushfires also increased by 9.5 per cent, from 559 last year to 612 this year. Fire-related deaths also decreased from 18 in 2023 to 12 in 2024, representing a 33.33 per cent reduction, while fire-related injuries decreased from 90 to 30, representing a 66.67 per cent reduction.

Effective emergency response

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Deputy National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GNFS,  Divisional Officer III (DO III), Desmond Essoun Ackah, said the positive trends in decreased fatalities and injuries across fire incidents and other rescues reflected the GNFS’ effective implementation of safety measures and emergency response strategies.

Those improvements, he said, had not only enhanced public safety but also streamlined the service’s operations, allowing for more efficient resource allocation and better management of emergency situations.

Assurance

He gave an assurance of the service’s commitment to intensifying public fire safety campaigns through traditional and social media, focusing on residential areas, lorry stations, market centres and institutions.

Also, he said fire safety audits and inspections would be intensified in public and private commercial premises to identify fire hazards and proffer mitigation measures to minimise the risks associated with those hazards.

He said the service was collaborating with the National Road Safety Authority and other relevant institutions through an intensified road safety education to enhance respect for sirens of emergency vehicles, and minimise or prevent road crashes with their attendant deaths and injuries.

DO III Ackah urged the public to adhere to the basic fire safety protocols being promoted by the service to prevent incidents and protect lives, property and the environment.

Constance Kisbour Mensah, a 15-year-old who was reported missing on July 28, 2024, has been found alive and is reportedly in good health.

Her disappearance had raised concerns after she went missing following punishment for returning home late from a barber shop.

Constance was located on August 9, 2024, near the Kasoa station with a woman who had allegedly been providing her shelter. The woman fled when Constance’s relatives approached.

A cadet trainer spotted her and informed her school authorities and the Police, aiming to verify her claims of being a school dropout.

At the Police station, Constance initially resisted questioning but later opened up to a senior CID officer about her reasons for leaving home. She admitted that she had been convinced by a classmate and her relative to travel to their hometown for a festival.

The classmate’s relatives had allegedly advised Constance to keep the trip a secret, leading her to pack a few belongings and leave home without permission.

When the trip fell through, Constance, fearing punishment, wandered for several days before being taken in by the woman, who exploited her for her thrift business.

Constance has since been reunited with her parents, and the Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.

Ernest Kofi Owusu-Bempah Bonsu, the convener of the Fixing the Country Movement, has voiced strong discontent with the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) recent conclusions regarding former President John Dramani Mahama’s role in the Airbus corruption case.

In a statement released on Friday, August 9, Owusu-Bempah criticized the OSP’s decision to exonerate Mahama despite confirming that he was the individual referred to as  “Government Official 1” in the UK and US court documents linked to the case.

Owusu-Bempah expressed disappointment, suggesting that the OSP’s decision to close the high-profile case leaves much to be desired.

He referenced judicial records indicating that bribes were indeed exchanged during Mahama’s time in office, and pointed out that US court documents characterized “Government Official 1” as having a reputation for accepting bribes, raising serious concerns about the OSP’s findings.

He also highlighted that the Fixing the Country Movement was the first to petition the OSP on September 15, 2023, to take urgent action on the Airbus/Mahama case.

Owusu-Bempah warned that the group would organize public demonstrations within seven days if the OSP does not revisit its conclusions.

Read full statement below:

OWUSU BEMPAH’S RESPONSE TO OSP INQUIRY INTO BRIBERY OF GHANAIAN OFFICIALS IN AIRBUS CORRUPTION

My attention has been drawn to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP)’s media Statement earlier today, on its concluded investigations into the Airbus corruption saga,

It is quite instructive to note that the OSP has confirmed former President John Mahama as the individual referenced as ‘Government official one’ in the Airbus bribery scandal, but went ahead to clear him of any corruption and corruption related offences.

According to the OSP’s own conclusion, Mahama is the government official one mentioned in the UK and US Court documents;

“The individual described as Government Official One by the UK court and Individual One by the US court is John Dramani Mahama. He is a citizen of Ghana, he was the Vice President of Ghana from 7th January 2009 to 2012. The President of Ghana from 2012 to 7th January 2017. His tenure of office as the Vice President coincided with the time-frame of the UK and US investigation of the first airbus campaign into the sale of 2C295 aircraft to Ghana.”

Let me say that the OSP’s decision to end this high-profile case thoroughly leaves a lot to be desired.

In fact, according to admissions and court documents, beginning in at least 2008 and continuing until at least 2015, Airbus engaged in and facilitated a scheme to offer and pay bribes to decision makers and other influencers, including foreign officials, in order to obtain improper business advantages and win lucrative contracts in several countries including Ghana.

As a matter of fact, judicial records made public on 31 January 2020 by the British and American authorities, which Airbus acknowledges to be true, shows that between 2009 and 2015 an Airbus subsidiary specialising in the defence sector hired the brother of a high-ranking Ghanaian elected official(Government Official 1), as well as a friend of the said brother and a third person to serve as commercial partners in the sale of three military transport aircraft, model C295, to Ghana.

It turned out that Philip Middlemiss, a renowned British actor, Leanne Davis and John Mahama’s brother, Samuel Adam Mahama were the intermediaries between Airbus and former President Mahama, otherwise known as Government Official I as identified by the US and UK authorities.

Truth is, the Airbus corruption is the biggest corruption case ever. Indeed, payment of bribes were made and received and the beneficiary was GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL 1.

Paragraph 136 of the US Court documents  actually described Government official I as having a reputation for bribe taking.

It reads:

“Government Official 1” had such a reputation as a prolific bribe-collector that within three weeks of the election of the incoming Government, AND BEFORE IT WAS SWORN IN, Airbus reached agreement with brother of “Government Official 1,” described in the US version of Court documents as “Individual 1.”

Interestingly, the British judge in charge of the case found that Airbus had sought, through these kickbacks, to obtain an “undue favour” from a member of the Ghanaian government.

As a result, Ghana bought three Airbus C295 military transport aircraft – two in 2011 and another in 2015, all under the presidency of Mills/Mahama.

So, what is the OSP talking about here? If the US and UK authorities have found Mahama culpable in the Airbus bribery saga, what is the OSP talking about here?

Isn’t it ironical for the OSP to conclude that  Mahama didn’t benefit from the Airbus bribery scheme, when indeed the UK and US Court documents actually described Government official one as a beneficiary of the bribery scheme?

It is clear that the OSP was faced with a difficult situation very early in his tenure and made a number of mistakes and misjudgments, especially with his conclusion that Mahama wasn’t a beneficiary of the bribery money.

This is a crucial case which cuts to the willingness and ability of the OSP to investigate and prosecute serious alleged criminality, and if the OSP is not able to do so, then citizens like my good self and the Fixing the Country Movement will be left with on options than to embark on mass protest to register our displeasure.

As a matter of fact, Fixing the Country Movement was the first to petition the Office of the Special Prosecutor on 15th of September 2023 for an urgent action on this Airbus/Mahama case, and we’re again asking the OSP to come again, else we’ll be forced to hold a public action/demonstration in seven(7) days to register our displeasure.

Let’s all say no to corruption.

Three individuals accused of siphoning GH₵252,923.92 from the account of Afro-Arab Microfinance Limited have been brought before the court.

At the Dansoman Circuit Court, two of the accused were present: Michael Kumi Arhin, who is unemployed, and Michael Assibu, a Finance Manager. Both have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, specifically stealing, and the act of stealing itself.

The third accused, Grace Adade, is currently at large.

Arhin and Assibu, who were represented by legal counsel, entered their not guilty pleas before the court, which was presided over by Mrs. Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.

The court granted bail to Arhin and Assibu, setting the amount at GH₵300,000 with three sureties, one of which must be justified with a title deed. The court also ordered them to report to the police every two weeks until further notice.

The case has been adjourned to October 14, 2024, for Case Management (CMC).

During the hearing, the defense counsel requested bail, arguing that the accused had pleaded not guilty and had a defense to present against the charges. The defense noted that the accused had been on police inquiry bail since their arrest in 2023 and had not attempted to flee, suggesting they were not a flight risk.

Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, leading the prosecution, did not oppose the bail request but emphasized that the bail conditions should ensure the accused would appear for trial whenever required. The prosecution also noted that the police were still searching for the third accused, Grace Adade.

According to the prosecution’s account, the complainant, Ebenezer Egir Tetteh, General Manager of Afro-Arab Company Limited, Kokomlemle in Accra, reported the case. The company operates in microfinance, and the three accused were former employees.

In 2022, Arhin, a loan officer at the company, created an account for his girlfriend, Ruth Adomah, in the company’s system. He then began crediting this account with funds, aided by Grace Adade, a teller, and with the approval of Assibu, the then Financial Manager.

The accused continued these transactions, crediting the account with various sums and sharing the money among themselves after withdrawals.

In December 2022, sensing trouble, Assibu resigned from the company. In January 2023, when a new Financial Manager, Gabriel Quaye, took over, it was discovered that Assibu still had access to the company’s accounts system.

On April 28, 2023, the case was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of Arhin and Assibu, while Adade escaped.

An audit conducted on May 29, 2023, by an external auditor revealed that Assibu had continued approving transactions made by Adade into the account created by Arhin, along with five additional accounts opened under the names of other supposed customers. The accused ultimately stole GH₵252,923.92 from the company.

During questioning, the accused admitted to the offenses and refunded GH₵72,000, which was returned to the complainant. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend Grace Adade, who remains at large.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sworn in Deputy Chief of Staff, Fawaz Aliu, along with two others, as new Ambassadors.

Mr. Aliu has been appointed as Ambassador-At-Large while retaining his current position.

The other two appointees are Major General Charles Kojo Abedi Awity, who will serve as Ghana’s Ambassador to Serbia, and Mr. Peprah Ampratwum, who has been named as Ambassador In-See-to.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Jubilee House.

President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that the three appointees will excel in their new roles and contribute to strengthening Ghana’s diplomatic relations globally.

He urged the new Ambassadors to work towards deepening Ghana’s ties with other countries and to seek out investment opportunities for the nation.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Major General Abedi pledged to serve Ghana with distinction.

The appointments of Mr. Aliu and Mr. Ampratwum follow that of Nana Asante Bediatuo as an Ambassador-at-Large in June 2024.

This earlier appointment sparked controversy, with many questioning whether Nana Bediatuo would continue as the Executive Secretary at the Presidency. Some Ghanaians also criticized the timing and necessity of the appointment, calling it insensitive to the concerns of the public.

Residents of Akwamu in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region have given the government a two-week ultimatum to address several pressing issues affecting their community.

Over the weekend, the residents staged a protest to voice their frustration over what they see as neglect by successive governments.

Dressed in red and black, the protesters marched from New Akrade to the Atimpoku roundabout, chanting protest songs to draw attention to their grievances.

Traditional leaders joined the peaceful demonstration, named “Walking for Attention,” and performed libation rituals to invoke blessings on the event, which was closely monitored by the Akosombo Police command with support from the Odumase Division.

Protesters held placards with messages such as “VRA, give employment to the people of Akwamu. Stop the sale of Akwamu lands,” and “Akwamu deserves better.”

The convener, Emmanuel Ansah Amadi, emphasized the importance of the Akwamu area to the country, highlighting the community’s contributions, such as providing land for the construction of the Akosombo Dam and the Adome Bridge, which benefit the entire nation.

“The people of Akwamu have shown unwavering generosity and patriotism, offering their lands for critical infrastructure projects. Despite these contributions, the Akwamu people find themselves sidelined, with their lands continuously taken and their efforts ignored,” Amadi said. “We are not asking for special treatment; we are asking for fairness, respect, and acknowledgement of our pivotal role in the nation’s progress.”

The group also pointed out that the government has yet to respond to any of the 13 letters they have written.

Lead convener Dr. Nana Kwame Acheampong Kwakye raised concerns about the alleged renaming of the Tema Mpakadan Railway Station to Juapong Station and vowed to resist this change.

“Renaming the railway station to reflect the true heritage of the land is a necessary first step. Furthermore, broader recognition and respect for the Akwamu people’s contributions must be established,” Kwakye stated.

After addressing the crowd, the group presented a petition outlining their grievances to the District Chief Executive of Asuogyaman, Mavis Akonnor, who received the petition on behalf of the government. She praised the leadership for ensuring a peaceful protest and assured the residents that their concerns would be communicated to the appropriate authorities for resolution.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred early in the morning when the thief attempted to steal a motorbike parked outside a house.

The motorbike’s owner noticed the suspicious activity and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents.

Within minutes, a crowd had gathered, and the thief was captured before he could escape.

The thief was then dragged to a nearby gutter filled with refuse and stagnant water and was forced to swim in the filthy water as a warning to others who might consider similar criminal acts.

Inspector-General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has called on the public to support the Police in their efforts to combat disinformation and misinformation.

He emphasized that addressing this modern-day issue requires the collective effort of all stakeholders.

Speaking at a summit organized by the Ghana Report, Dr Dampare highlighted that disinformation and misinformation pose significant threats to national security and social cohesion.

“Disinformation and misinformation are national security threats, and we should recognize them as such. We must leave here determined to address these challenges that threaten our nation’s security,” he said.

Dr. Dampare expressed concern about the public’s reaction when law enforcement agencies take action against offenders, noting that the same public calling for solutions sometimes opposes the enforcement efforts.

“What do we want as a people? Do we want to be on the side of right or wrong? We need to decide. Everyone must be part of the solution in the fight against disinformation and misinformation.

“When actions are taken against those spreading disinformation or misinformation, some people attack those fighting it,” he added.

The IGP emphasized the need for a mindset change.

“We need to change our mindset. We have become so inhumane to each other that our happiness often comes from the pain of others. We should strive to change that” he added.

Petitioners from the Santrofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) areas have filed an appeal against the Ho High Court’s dismissal of their lawsuit challenging John Peter Amewu’s election as the Member of Parliament for Hohoe.

The High Court dismissed the case on Monday, July 29, citing a lack of jurisdiction.

The SALL enclave, which includes 13 communities and around 17,000 voters, was excluded from participating in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

Five residents from SALL had petitioned the High Court in Ho, seeking to invalidate the election that resulted in Mr. Amewu’s victory as MP. However, the court ruled that the petition essentially questioned the constitutionality of CI 128, the regulation under which the Electoral Commission conducted the 2020 elections.

Unhappy with the High Court’s decision, the petitioners have appealed to the Court of Appeal.

They argue that the trial judge erred by dismissing the petition on the grounds of the High Court’s alleged lack of jurisdiction.

The petitioners believe their case deserves further consideration and are seeking to overturn the High Court’s decision to ensure their concerns are fully addressed.

In their appeal, they assert that the trial judge failed to recognize that, under a proper interpretation of CI 112, the SALL traditional areas did not become part of the Oti region but remained part of the Hohoe Municipality and Constituency, which did not require constitutional interpretation.

Additionally, the petitioners claim that the trial judge ignored multiple statutory violations by the Electoral Commission, which they argue rendered Mr. Amewu’s election invalid under the Representation of the People’s Law 1992 (PNDCL 284), Section 20(1)(b).

They are seeking relief, including an order to overturn the High Court’s judgment and a declaration that Mr. Amewu’s election as MP for Hohoe in the December 2020 parliamentary election is null and void.

The state of being childless has the tendency to plunge couples – women especially, into various susceptible situations in their bid to escape societal stigma.

They are mocked by family, humiliated by society and traditions, and taken advantage of and exploited by all manner of people, including men claiming to have been called by God, men who assume the mandate to care for and protect those who flock to them for spiritual help.

This is the story of a 48-year-old woman, who, for the condition of anonymity, would be called Auntie Naa in this article.

Also Read: AG Dame ‘unwholly’ to address Bar Conference this year – Edudzi Tamekloe

Prophet lures her to have his way

Auntie Naa had gone to a ‘man of God’ at Mamprobi, a suburb of Accra, to seek spiritual solution to her barrenness. She found no solution, and the ‘man of God’ aggravated her situation by trying to take advantage of her already troubled mind and body to sleep with her.

Speaking in an interview with journalist and gender advocate, Emelia Naa Ayeley Aryee, Auntie Naa revealed that following a friend’s recommendation, she decided to try that particular prophet (name withheld), after previously trying some others with no desired results.

There is a special church programme organised only on Tuesdays for people with various troubles. After the main event, selected ones are invited to meet with the prophet face-to-face with the assurance that by doing so, the prophet gets to know them more closely so that solutions will come easily and faster.

It was during one of the ‘special’ counseling sessions that the prophet told Auntie Naa that she was beautiful, and that only after he had slept with her would she be able to conceive. Auntie Naa, however, rejected the offer notwithstanding the cajoling and promises the prophet made to her.

When I went to see him on one of the days, he told me that I was nice. He said he wanted to sleep with me. He said God told him that if he sleeps with me, I will be able to get pregnant. But I told him that I can’t do it. If I do it, God will not even listen to my prayers anymore,” Auntie Naa disclosed.

According to her, the prophet kept persuading her to have his way but she remained resolute in her decision never to go to bed with any other man apart from her husband, worse still a ‘man of God’.

More Pastors try to take advantage of women struggling with infertility stigma

Aside from the Mamprobi ‘unholy’ prophet, Auntie Naa had fallen prey to several other ‘men of God’, who either wanted to have a feel of her body or find ways to take the little money she had left on her as she had been hopping from one ‘man of God’ to the other seeking help.

Also Read: Lord Kenya hit with sad news

She had travelled far and near visiting forests and mountains to join prayer teams to make supplications to God to intervene for her to have even a single child. In all these, she had been tempted to either part with money or offer her body in exchange for a baby.

Her case is just one of the many women who are desperate to have a child encounter because some members of society would not let them rest without constantly reminding them of their childlessness.

Financial muscles required for infertility treatment

Treatment of infertility in Ghana requires money, so much money and to keep one consistent until one reaches her goal. However, most of them, like Auntie Naa, lose their zeal along the line and give up because they no longer have the money to continue with the treatment.

This is why Auntie Naa and other women with similar stories resort to unapproved interventions for their infertility instead of visiting a specialist hospital for treatment and cure. She had spent fortunes on herbal hospitals and their medications but with no success.

What makes her situation even more painful is the fact that she had been pregnant six times but miscarried them all. Sadly, she listened and paid attention to unsolicited counsel by persons who were not professionals, who asked her not to go to the hospital because what was happening to her was more spiritual than medical.

Therefore, never for once did she visit the hospital to ascertain what the cause of the reoccurring miscarriages was until when she turned 46 years. It was during a medical outreach programme by a medical team in her area that she was told she had issues with her uterus which made it hard for it to hold a baby to full term – the reason for her uncontrolled miscarriages.

Perhaps, if she had visited the hospital when the first and second miscarriages started, she would have found a solution and kept the subsequent pregnancies.

What society ought to do

Despite all the financial, emotional, and psychological battles she was having for not being able to have a child, she also had to deal with the associated stigma.

She is called names, she faces constant ridicule instead of being supported or assisted to see a medical doctor, and she is referred to as one “without anything to think about”.

The two were accused of causing a financial loss of €2.37 million to the state in a deal involving the procurement of ambulances for the Government of Ghana.

In a 2:1 decision, led by Justice Kweku Tawiah ACKAH-Boafo and Justice Philip Bright Mensah, the Court of Appeal contradicted the trial court’s earlier order that required Dr. Forson and Jakpa to present their defense.

However, Justice Alex Poku Acheampong dissented from the majority’s decision.

Following the ruling, Attorney General Godfred Dame expressed his disagreement, arguing that the decision contradicts the evidence presented by the prosecution.

Despite this, Edudzi Tameklo remains confident that if the Attorney General challenges the ruling, his client will ultimately be vindicated.

The acquittal marks the conclusion of the controversial Ambulance Case.

In an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, Mr. Tameklo reiterated his client’s innocence and expressed relief that the Court of Appeal upheld their rights.

“I’ve always believed in the innocence of my client [Dr Cassiel Ato Forson] and I can tell you, whether Supreme Court or Antoa or Nogokpo, my client will he vindicated,” he insisted.
