Ibrahim Tanko, the coach of Ghana’s U-23 national team, known as the Black Meteors, has expressed his disappointment after their early elimination from the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Despite earning four points from three matches, Ghana fell short in their attempt to progress to the next stage of the tournament. Their hopes were shattered on Friday night when they were unable to secure a victory against Guinea, ultimately leading to Guinea’s advancement and dashing the Black Meteors’ aspirations of qualifying for the Paris Olympic Games. Tanko addressed the media in a post-match press conference, expressing his regret over the team’s performance and recognizing that they had let down not only Ghanaians but also themselves. He mentioned that despite the disappointment, they would remain grateful to God in every situation and committed to thoroughly analyzing and identifying the areas where they fell short.

Tanko stated in the press conference, “I believe we disappointed Ghanaians and ourselves, but we express gratitude to God in all circumstances, and as I mentioned, we will analyze and determine what went wrong.”
Guinea emerged as the stronger team, securing a 1-1 draw and advancing to the semi-finals alongside Group A leaders, Morocco. Both teams entered the match with three points, but Guinea held the advantage with a better goal difference, knowing that a draw would be enough to secure their progression. Ghana’s forward, Emmanuel Yeboah, took advantage of defensive mistakes by Guinea, displaying his skills with an exceptional finish that gave Ghana the lead. However, Ghana continued to struggle defensively, resulting in their conceding of the eighth goal in just three games. In the 60th minute, Ibrahima Breze’s well-executed volley earned Guinea a well-deserved equalizer.
