Mark Owen Woyongo, a former Minister of Defence and Member of Parliament for the Navrongo Central Constituency, has passed away at the age of 78. Family sources, confirming his death to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra, reported that the ex-Upper East Regional Minister had been unwell for some time. He passed away in Accra during the late hours of Wednesday, January 17, 2023.

Mr. Woyongo served as the MP for Navrongo Central from 2012 to 2016, losing the seat to the late Joseph Kofi Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). After announcing his retirement from politics in December 2016, he stated that he would not seek any political position again.

His political journey began in the 2008 parliamentary election when he contested on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket, securing 41.7% of the votes but losing to the late Mr. Adda by 1,130 votes (3.5%). Mr. Woyongo was appointed as the Upper East Regional Minister by late President John Evans Atta Mills in 2009 and ret: ained in that position by former President John Dramani Mahama following President Mills’ death. In 2013, he was further appointed as the Minister for Defence.
