Esteemed Ghanaian writer, Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo, passed away suddenly in the early morning of Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at the age of 81. A statement from her family, issued on May 31, 2023, confirmed the renowned author’s demise.
Following a short illness, Professor Ama Ata Aidoo, who made significant contributions to African literature, breathed her last. Her literary prowess extended beyond fiction to encompass poetry, theater, and essays.
Prof. Ata Aidoo had a profound impact on generations of African female authors with her award-winning novels, plays, short stories, children’s literature, and poetry.
Born on March 23, 1942, in Abeadzi Kyiakor, in Ghana’s Volta Region, Prof. Aidoo gained fame for her novel “Our Sister Killjoy” and the play “Anowa.”
Through her writings on gender roles, African identity, and post-colonialism, she influenced numerous individuals over several decades.

Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo’s contributions to the literary world have garnered widespread acclaim, earning her several awards and honors.
Her novel “Changes” won the 1992 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book in Africa. In 2018, she received the prestigious Ghanatta Award for writing, recognizing her lifelong dedication to Ghanaian and African literature.
