Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr has expressed her disappointment with the Headies Awards for their failure to announce her award category during the 16th edition of the prestigious award show.
The event, which occurred on September 3, 2023, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, USA, ended abruptly without announcing 13 categories, including Best Female Artiste, Best Recording of The Year, and Songwriter of The Year, on stage.
Ayra Starr, who was honored as the Best Female Artiste of the Year, took to her Twitter account to share her frustration, stating that she could not be grateful for winning an award that was not deemed significant enough to be announced on stage.

“We work hard, every single one of us! I’ve seen Tiwa record 4 hit songs in the same night, Tems breathes and lives for music; we didn’t deserve such nonchalance! Nigeria, you didn’t raise me to settle for less,” Ayra Starr declared.
She criticized the organizers for what she perceived as a lack of appreciation for the hard work of female artists in the industry. Many viewers and attendees echoed her sentiment, seeing the decision not to present the female award on stage as disrespectful to female artists in the music industry.
Although the Headies Awards eventually announced the unannounced awards via social media, Ayra Starr’s reaction underscores the importance of recognizing and celebrating the achievements of female artists on an equal footing with their male counterparts.
