The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unanimously approved Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as John Dramani Mahama’s Running Mate. Mr. Mahama described her as “God-fearing, a distinguished scholar, a conscientious public servant, and a role model” in a tweet following the endorsement.
This marks the second occasion where the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and Minister of Education will join former President Mahama on the NDC’s ticket for a significant election.

Before her selection, various individuals were speculated to be potential running mates, including Julius Debrah, former Chief of Staff; Dr. Kwabena Duffour, former Finance Minister and Governor of the Bank of Ghana; Mr. Kwame Awuah Darko, former Chief Executive of Tema Oil Refinery and BOST; Kojo Bonsu, former Mayor of Kumasi; and Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, the NDC Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey Constituency.
Former President Mahama had previously submitted his preferred running mate’s name to the National Executive Committee and the Council of Elders of the party for assessment. The party, through its General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, stated that both the NEC and the Council of Elders were preparing to discuss Mr. Mahama’s choice for running mate.

Meanwhile, former President Mahama is set to officially announce his running mate to the public on March 7, 2024.
