Daniel Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has acknowledged the legitimacy of the leaked audio recording outlining a plan to remove the current Inspector General of Police (IGP). He also confirmed that the voice heard in the recording belongs to him.
During his appearance before the investigative committee on Monday, August 29, Bugri Naabu disclosed the names of the individuals present in the meeting as well. He explained that the meeting occurred at his office in Osu, although he couldn’t recall the exact date.
“My voice is there…well one Commander Asare, a police commander, but I don’t know which district or which section he commands, but he introduced himself to me when he came to my office that he was a police commander based at the police headquarters…I asked him where does he know me and he told me that during the time of political campaigns in 2014, 2015, 2016, I used to come to Wa with the President and the Vice President and Alhaji Short I said that if he says that, then it is true.

“Apart from Commander Asare, there was one man who later joined called COP Mensah, but he is on leave now prior to his retirement and he was also part of it, and later one Gyebi who is also a police superintendent at the Police Headquarters, also joined through a phone call,” he said.
Background: The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, commissioned a seven-member committee to investigate the leaked audio recording detailing a secretive plan to remove the IGP. The conversation in the recording implies that an unnamed influential policeman was soliciting support for the removal of the current IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, with the intention of replacing him with someone more aligned with the ruling party’s interests.

The objective of the alleged plot, according to the conversation, was to secure police backing for manipulating the 2024 Election in favor of the ruling NPP. The opposition Minority MPs strongly protested against the purported scheme, calling for a forensic investigation to identify those involved in the concerning conversation and hold them accountable under the law.
On the other hand, MPs from the Majority side expressed doubt regarding the authenticity of the recording. They also denied any connection to or intention of rigging elections, asserting that the NPP would win the 2024 elections through fair means.
