The Director General of Operations for the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, is scheduled to make an appearance before the Ad-Hoc Committee today, which is Thursday, August 31. This committee was established by Parliament to conduct an inquiry into an alleged conspiracy to remove the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo-Dampare.
COP Mensah is anticipated to attend alongside two other colleagues. This development comes in response to assertions made by the Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP, Daniel Bugri Naabu, claiming that the senior police officer heard in the leaked audio is COP George Alex Mensah.
During his testimony before the Committee on Monday, Bugri Naabu stated that he recorded the conversation about the purported plot in order to protect his party’s interests. He verified the authenticity of the covert recording and mentioned his intention to send the recording to President Akufo-Addo.

“The reason for recording this tape is that they are coming to tell me to go and tell the President something that they know they are saying, and it is either I don’t go and tell the President and then I and my party suffer for it, or if I also go to talk to the President, it is good to tell him the right thing, and since I cannot keep everything they were telling me at that point, it was very good to record and I know the President, that if I go and tell him something and it turns out not to be true, next time he won’t give me respect,” he explained to the Committee.
Bugri Naabu also revealed that Commander Asare, COP Mensah, and Supt Gyebi were the individuals engaged in the discussion with him regarding the IGP. Consequently, all three are expected to appear before the committee. Committee Chairperson Samuel Atta Akyea confirmed this and stated that all three individuals must be present on Thursday.
“Our next sitting is on Thursday. COP George Alex Mensah will appear, Supt Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Gyebi will also appear. These are the three individuals who will appear on Thursday,” he stressed.

The leaked tape’s content initiated a nationwide discourse, given the involvement of senior police officers in the conversation.
In response to public outcry, Parliament established the Committee, with Samuel Atta-Akyea, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, leading it, to delve into the matter. The committee’s mandate includes investigating the authenticity of the leaked tape as well as the intricate allegations that have captured the nation’s attention.
The Committee is required to submit its report by September 10.
