Gospel musician Celestine Donkor has issued an apology for her recent joke about Ewe surnames, which has sparked controversy.
During an interview on Accra-based TV3, Celestine jokingly expressed her preference for men with ‘light’ surnames over ‘heavy’ ones.
However, this comment was perceived as insensitive by social media users.

In response to the backlash, Celestine posted on Instagram expressing her regret, stating, “It turned out to be a bad joke, an expensive joke.”
She clarified that her comments were made in jest and were not intended to mock Ewes or their culture, and she has taken the feedback seriously.
“Who am I? I’m just human. Most of the time we go on these interviews, as much as we have a pure heart and a clear mind, it’s not everything we say that we’re pleasing to somebody, and so we take it,” she added.
