The Assin Fosu Magistrate Court has imposed a fine of Gh¢4,800 on a 40-year-old hairdresser, Charlotte Asiedu, and a 21-year-old auto electrician, Tetteh, for persuading a 17-year-old girl to undergo an illegal abortion. Asiedu, who administered a concoction to the girl, was charged with the illegal abortion offense, while Tetteh, the victim’s boyfriend, faced charges of abetment of crime.

Both individuals admitted guilt during the court proceedings presided over by Mr. Abdul Majid Iliasu. The complainant, Victoria Arthur, the victim’s mother and a trader residing in Assin Fosu, reported the incident. The victim, a Senior High School form three student, discovered her pregnancy while on vacation, approximately 17 weeks along.
Upon learning of her condition, the victim initially informed Tetteh, who advised her to notify her mother. However, out of fear, she hesitated. Instead, she requested Gh¢200 from Tetteh to purchase medication, but the pharmacist declined to sell the drugs, citing the advanced stage of the pregnancy.

Tetteh discussed the situation with a friend, leading to the involvement of Asiedu. She agreed to help and prepared a Gh¢200 concoction. After consuming the mixture, the victim experienced severe stomach pains and was taken to St Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu for treatment. An examination revealed that the fetus had died, and the victim underwent forced labor.
Following a complaint by Ms. Arthur, the police arrested and charged the convicts. Currently, the victim’s education has been disrupted to undergo two major surgeries for her survival, as stated in a medical report obtained by the Ghana News Agency.
