Health Minister must resign as NHIS System has failed – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that the current Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, has failed, citing the struggles of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Mahama has alleged that hospitals are refusing to accept NHIS cards due to the government’s non-payment of claims.

During his campaign to be elected as the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress ahead of the 2024 elections, Mahama called for the Health Minister to resign. He stated, “every sector has been destroyed, just look at NHIS, and I want to tell the Health Minister, he himself has admitted that he has failed because if he has not been able to grow the NHIS and he says it has failed, then he has no business being the Minister of Health. He should resign.”

Mahama also claimed that hospitals are turning away NHIS card bearers due to unpaid claims, saying, “Today, if you take the NHIS card you get nothing in the hospital, most of the hospitals are turning the NHIS card bearers away because they are not paying their claims. The whole of this year into last year all the treatment that the NHIS gave to the card bearers, they have not been paid for it and so how do you expect them to continue treating them, the Minister should resign.”
