WhatsApp has responded to the Indian government’s request to address the issue of increasing international scam calls on Meta’s messaging platform. The company has assured users that it prioritizes their privacy and security. WhatsApp offers features such as ‘Block’ and ‘Report’ to help users avoid unwanted calls and messages. Additionally, the company has enhanced its artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems, which are expected to reduce the current rate of scam calls by at least 50 percent.

A spokesperson for WhatsApp emphasized their commitment to user safety and stated that the company fully supports the government’s efforts in this regard. They highlighted that WhatsApp is a leading provider of end-to-end encrypted services, which ensures user protection. The spokesperson further explained that their upgraded AI and ML systems will effectively control and minimize such incidents.
Earlier, Minister of State for IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, had announced that the IT Ministry would send a notice to WhatsApp regarding the issue of spam calls from unknown international numbers. The goal is to safeguard user privacy on digital platforms, and all such platforms are responsible for ensuring the safety of their users. The government will respond appropriately to any alleged misuse or breach of privacy.

Reports of Indian WhatsApp users receiving spam calls from international numbers, including country codes such as Indonesia (+62), Vietnam (+84), Malaysia (+60), Kenya (+254), and Ethiopia (+251), have prompted attention to this issue. Users have taken to Twitter to express their complaints, prompting action from the government.
