Released on July 29, 2026, Arin Rebo’s “Oarfish Ascending” is a cool, layered piano piece that feels less like a conventional composition and more like something slowly emerging from the depths. Constantly blooming without rushing toward a dramatic destination, the track creates a sense of movement, mystery, and quiet discovery.

The piece draws inspiration from the Japanese legend surrounding the oarfish, a deep-sea creature traditionally associated with earthquakes and regarded in folklore as a messenger from the realm of the sea god. Rebo takes that idea somewhere more contemplative. Rather than attempting to make the oarfish sound ominous, the music imagines the strange beauty of a messenger that doesn’t even understand the role it has been given.
That concept works particularly well with the minimalist piano approach. The arrangement allows individual notes and layers to develop gradually, creating the feeling of something rising through deep water. There is no need for the piece to over-explain its story; its atmosphere does much of the talking.
