The vocals complement the musical arrangement well, giving the song a natural flow that allows its storytelling to take centre stage. There is something appealing about how the performance supports the lyrics without making the emotions feel exaggerated. The repeated phrase “she’s soft in the middle” becomes the song’s defining hook, drawing attention to the contrast between the strength this woman shows the world and the tenderness she keeps hidden beneath it.
The lyrics paint a vivid picture of someone who has built emotional walls over time. She laughs as though nothing can hurt her, insists she does not need anyone, and carries herself with the confidence of someone who has learned to stand her ground. Yet, beneath that tough image lies a person still dealing with loneliness and the effects of a broken past. The line about loving her patiently is especially meaningful because it recognises that trust cannot simply be demanded; it has to be earned.

What makes “Soft in the Middle” work is its compassionate perspective. Rather than treating emotional guardedness as a flaw, the song encourages listeners to understand the experiences that may have shaped it. Its recurring chorus reinforces that message, making the central idea memorable while giving the track an inviting sense of familiarity. “Soft in the Middle” is a nice track with fitting vocals and relatable storytelling. Faith Walker offers a reminder that people who appear the strongest can still need tenderness, patience, and someone willing to see beyond the walls they have built.
