After spending years exploring different musical territories, Jeffrey Friend returns to his jazz roots with Different. On Purpose., a five-track EP released on October 31, 2026. This marks his second jazz release, following his first in 2003, and brings together decades of experience as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and recording engineer. What makes this project particularly interesting is how naturally its musical ideas unfold. The sound and texture evolve from one track to another, with each transition contributing to the overall listening experience. Rather than feeling like five separate recordings put together, the EP plays like a complete musical journey, balancing warmth, movement and moments of reflection.
‘1. One For Mickey: The EP opens on a warm, catchy note with “One For Mickey.” There’s an inviting quality to the arrangement, with a groove that makes the track naturally danceable. It establishes an enjoyable pace for the project, introducing Jeff’s jazz direction with a sound that feels relaxed yet engaging.

2. Walking Downtown: takes a more measured approach at the beginning, allowing its musical ideas to develop gradually before blossoming into something fuller. I particularly like how the arrangement builds without losing its initial calmness. It’s a smooth progression that gives the track its own character.
3. Remembrance: introduces a cooler, more ambient atmosphere, with reflective orchestral textures shaping its direction. There’s a sense of space in the arrangement that allows the music to breathe. It provides a welcome change of pace, adding depth and a contemplative moment to the EP.
4. Good Morning: Warmth returns on “Good Morning,” supported by a lovely arrangement and impeccable drumming. The percussion deserves particular attention, adding movement and character while working naturally with the other musical elements. It’s an enjoyable composition that carries a welcoming energy throughout.

5. There’s Always Another Idea: Closing the EP is “There’s Always Another Idea,” a lively composition featuring impressive guitar work and a catchy trumpet contribution. The guitar gives the track plenty of character, while the trumpet adds another engaging layer. Its danceable feel makes it an enjoyable way to bring the project to a close.

Different. On Purpose. is a fitting return to jazz for Jeffrey Friend, showing how years of musical exploration can enrich an artist’s original creative direction. The contributions from Sammy K, Lars Miler, Marcelo Berestovoy, Lee Swisher and Brian West add further character to the recordings. Across five tracks, Friend delivers warmth, rhythmic variety and thoughtful arrangements. It’s a cohesive instrumental EP that makes a convincing case for following your musical instincts, even after taking the long road elsewhere.
