Bryan’s comment must worry the EC and security agencies – Kobby Mensah

Business School (UGBS), has urged political parties, the security services, and the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to express alarm over recent remarks made by the Minister of Food and Agriculture. Last weekend, Bryan Acheampong addressed New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters at Mpraeso in the Eastern Region. He vowed to make sure that the party did not cede power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), even if they won the 2024 elections. He also said that if the NDC uses violence to try to retake power, the NPP has the “men” to take them on.On Saturday, April 15, Prof. Kobby Mensah stated the remarks made by the Abetifi MP are cause for alarm on The Keypoints on TV3/3FM.

“For me, I think that the EC must be concerned, the security agencies must be concerned, the political parties must be concerned, which the NDC has actually said they are concerned about,” he stated.

The opposition NDC has already requested that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) question the Agriculture Minister.

Abraham Amaliba, the party’s director of legal affairs, spearheaded the action, which prompted the NPP to request that 2020 presidential candidates John Dramani Mahama and Johnson Asiedu Nketia be investigated by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for making comparable remarks.

“I expected [the NPP] not to give away the Minister but I was expecting them to actually apologise, be remorseful and say that the Minister was carried away [and] we don’t think that this is the appropriate communication and we will have an internal process.

“In the meantime, we express that regret to the Ghanaian people. That would have been a fantastic political communication,” he added.

He stated his confidence that Mr. Acheampong had been reprimanded by his party in private, but he also anticipated a public response. He might be using this as a speaking act to persuade NPP followers to do something bad on election day.
