There’s a certain kind of stillness that only hits you when you’re floating above the world, silent, suspended, completely unbothered by gravity. That’s the world Jultrane pulls us into on “Les Alpes”, a slow-burning jazz daydream released on October 13, 2023, that doubles as a love letter to the French Alps and to the joy of just… breathing.

Born Julien Ndiaye, the French-Senegalese saxophonist carries the poise of someone who’s lived a few lifetimes. He studied the language of John Coltrane, earned his jazz stripes in the conservatories of southeastern France, and then, casually, became one of the top 100 paragliding pilots in the country. That strange duality, rooted in earth, yet obsessed with flight, seeps into “Les Alpes.” It’s traditional jazz on the surface: brushed drums, upright bass, a gently comping piano, and Jultrane’s warm sax tone gliding through it all like a sail catching soft wind.

But beneath the familiar, there’s lift. You can feel him remembering alpine sunlight on his shoulders, the rush of air under a paraglider wing, the rhythm of his feet on hiking trails. Every note rises like mist off a mountain lake, unhurried and glowing. Even without lyrics (it’s purely instrumental, though French in spirit), the track speaks volumes about serenity, perspective, and falling in love with silence again.

“Les Alpes” isn’t trying to impress you with speed or complexity. It wants to slow your pulse, unclench your jaw, and maybe convince you to look up from your screen long enough to notice the sky. For a debut-album cut, it’s remarkably self-assured, proof that Jultrane isn’t here to chase trends, he’s here to invite you into his altitude.
