Born during the uncertainty of the global pandemic, The Axolotl Project was founded in Calabria, an unlikely but fertile ground for innovation in jazz. The group quickly established itself as a symbol of resilience and creativity, drawing inspiration from the regenerative qualities of the axolotl. Much like the animal that adapts and renews itself, this collective of musicians embraces jazz’s constant evolution, blending tradition with the modern edge of contemporary improvisation.

On A Step into Space, Francesco Alampi’s guitar takes the lead, setting a meditative yet daring tone that feels both exploratory and grounded. His phrasing leaves room for the band’s rhythm section to breathe, with Paolo Ielo’s bass/double bass locking in the foundation and  Michele Misale ’s drums adding subtle propulsion. The trio’s synergy is undeniable, each element complements the other without crowding the mix, letting the music expand like a starfield in slow motion.

The track manages to stay deeply rooted in jazz while simultaneously gesturing toward something more abstract, a sonic metaphor for reaching into the unknown. You hear the interplay of instinct and rationality in every note, the careful balance between improvisation and compositional clarity. This isn’t background jazz, it’s music that demands you to sit with it, drift with it, and let your imagination fill in the silence between the notes.
