Broken Colours came through swinging with “Pretending,” released from their latest EP the same day ‘Could Be Worse‘ , and honestly, this track feels like the band hitting a new gear. It’s bluesy, gritty, and loud in all the right ways, but still polished enough to show how far they’ve come since their earlier releases. If you’ve been following their journey since the Broken Colours EP back in 2016, this one feels like the grown-up, stadium-ready version of that spark.

Right from the opening moments, “Pretending” rushes in with that claustrophobic tension “the walls are closing in”  and you feel it. The band leans heavy into that messy, emotional spiral, calling out how easy it is to fake being fine when everything inside is cracking. It’s super relatable, especially in a time where everyone’s curating perfect lives online while quietly trying not to fall apart.

This is one of their cleanest blends yet, blues-rock swagger, indie grit, and those huge, shout-ready choruses that could easily hit at festivals. You can hear the Jamiroquai funk influence in the groove, but then they flip it with Arctic Monkeys-style sharpness. The guitars snarl, the drums punch, and the hook hits like something built for a crowd to scream back.

The final section, that repeated plea to “hold on… before your time is over”  is what seals it. It’s raw, loud, and real. A reminder that even when the world is busy pretending, you don’t need to mute your truth. “Pretending” isn’t just another single. It’s a statement track. A signal flare for the band’s next chapter. And if Could Be Worse carries this energy all the way through, Broken Colours are about to have a massive year.
