The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has cut off electricity to the Accra Sports Stadium due to an outstanding debt of GH¢400,000 owed to the country’s power distributor. This disconnection occurred on Monday evening while efforts were underway to prepare the stadium for hosting the Paris 2024 Olympic football qualifier match between Zambia’s women’s national team and Ghana’s Black Queens on Friday.

This is not the first time ECG has taken such action due to unpaid bills. In March 2022, the National Task Force of ECG disconnected power supply to the stadium because of a debt amounting to GH¢508,000.00. Similarly, other activities managed by the National Sports Authority (NSA) have faced similar consequences. For instance, in April 2023, the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) disconnected power to the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale because of an outstanding debt of GH¢466,000.

In addition to the crucial Olympic qualifier scheduled for Friday, the Accra Sports Stadium is also slated to host all of the men’s football matches at the 2023 African Games starting on March 8. Furthermore, the facility will serve as the venue for two other events, namely sambo and wrestling.
