President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has nominated Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, JSC, for the position of Chief Justice of Ghana, subject to approval by the Council of State. The President announced his nomination during a speech on April 22, 2023, at the Flagstaff House in Accra.
“Justice Torkornoo has the experience, the knowledge, and the temperament necessary to serve as Chief Justice of Ghana,” President Akufo-Addo said. “She is a well-respected member of the judiciary, with a deep commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all Ghanaians.”

Justice Torkornoo, who has served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana since 2018, has a distinguished legal career spanning over two decades. Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court, she served as a High Court judge and an Appeals Court judge.
The President praised Justice Torkornoo’s track record, citing her “sterling reputation for integrity, impartiality, and sound judgment.” He expressed confidence that she would continue the legacy of her predecessor, Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, in upholding the independence and impartiality of the judiciary.
Justice Torkornoo’s nomination has been well-received by legal experts and civil society groups, who have praised her qualifications and character. The Ghana Bar Association, in a statement released after the President’s announcement, expressed its confidence in Justice Torkornoo’s ability to lead the judiciary with distinction.
