The CEO of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Kofi Agyepong, has announced plans to reassign former tollbooth workers. Mr. Agyepong stated that by the end of the year, these workers will be appointed as YEA’s District Disability Officers across the country. He made this announcement during his address at the launch of the Business and Employment Assistance Programme (BEAP) on Monday in Sunyani.
“By the end of this year, all former tollbooth workers who were laid off after the government abolished all tolls on public roads and bridges will be re-assigned as YEA district disability officers,” the CEO assured.
This decision comes two years after approximately 800 tollbooth workers were laid off following the discontinuation of toll collection nationwide in November 2021. The move aims to provide alternative employment opportunities for these workers.

On November 15, 2023, the aggrieved Persons With Disability (PWDs), who were among the affected tollbooth workers, were arrested while protesting at the Roads Ministry. Their protest aimed to seek an audience with Mr. Amoako-Atta and demand the payment of their salaries. The PWDs accused the government of not fulfilling its promise to offer them alternative livelihoods or reassign them.
