Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South Constituency and Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, has expressed his determination to make commercial sex work an unprofitable venture in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region.
The MP emphasized that the increasing prevalence of commercial sex work in Koforidua has the potential to negatively impact the youth and tarnish the city’s esteemed reputation. He made this commitment following his authorization of an operation conducted by the Koforidua District Police Command, resulting in the apprehension of approximately 50 commercial sex workers, with over 90 percent of them being of Nigerian origin, at well-known brothels and areas associated with such activities in the regional capital on Saturday.

During a speech at the Pentecost International Worship Center in Koforidua (PIWC-KOFORIDUA), where he addressed the congregation, Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi confirmed the operation and arrests. He emphasized that prostitution would not be tolerated in Koforidua and called upon residents, particularly landlords, to provide information voluntarily about commercial sex workers in their neighborhoods, enabling the police to take appropriate action against them.
“Yesterday, I directed the police to do an operation in town, and so they started the first batch of operation, and we want to arrest all the prostitutes that have come to the town. We managed to arrest about 50 people, and we will put them before the court and about 99 percent of them are Nigerians.”
“Prostitution in Koforidua will not be tolerated, and we urge you to help us to deal with the act in the town,” the MP added.
