Jack Horton’s version of Jim Croce’s “Operator” is a nice reinterpretation that pays tribute while forging its own emotional path. Released as part of his Imperfections EP, Horton transforms the folk classic into a sweeping piano-led ballad, layered with symphonic elements including timpani and strings.

A classically trained pianist, Horton brings elegance and cinematic depth to the track, allowing new shades of emotion to surface without overwhelming the song’s core message of heartbreak and acceptance. His restrained yet expressive vocals highlight the lyrics’ vulnerability, while the instrumentation adds a sense of scale and sorrow absent in the original.

Known for writing his own material, Horton approached this cover with reverence and purpose. “I don’t believe musicians should cover a song unless they bring something new,” he says—and he does exactly that.

Rather than replicate Croce’s brilliance, Horton expands it. His Operator is a love letter to the past, filtered through modern sensitivity and classical finesse. A beautiful, respectful reimagining.
