“The Silicon Island: Contact” masterfully transports listeners to 17th-century Taiwan, as Chinese settlers arrive on the island’s shores. Owens Huang skillfully employs perfect fourths and fifths to evoke uncertainty, gradually transitioning to fifth and octave intervals as the pioneers emerge from the fog.
The incorporation of the indigenous Amis people’s “Elder’s Drinking Song” adds depth, symbolizing the connection between Taiwan’s earliest inhabitants and their ancestral lands. Rich counterpoint techniques reflect the call-and-response nature of indigenous voices, conveying confidence and joy.
As the music seamlessly integrates traditional Chinese pentatonic scales, the cello’s elegant pizzicato technique evokes the guzheng, bridging historical periods.
