Zachary Mason’s latest single “5…4…3…2…1…”, released on October 3, 2025, feels like a sonic rocket launch, chaotic, colorful, and irresistibly alive. It’s the kind of song that doesn’t just play in your ears but vibrates through your imagination, blasting listeners from a smoggy Earth straight into the absurd unknown of Mars.

This is the opening track of his new EP, and it sets the tone with that classic Mason blend of humor and existential reflection. At its core, “5…4…3…2…1…” tells the story of humankind’s dramatic escape from a planet it destroyed, yet somehow, the track makes you laugh as much as it makes you think. Mason holds a mirror up to our collective mess, then smears it with neon paint and cosmic reverb.

It’s psychedelic pop-meets-experimental rock, with a sprinkle of vintage quirk. Nate Barnes (of Rose Hill Drive) lays down the drums with a rolling, almost hypnotic groove, while John Thomasson (Little Big Town) anchors it all with a deep, fluid bassline. Together, they create a foundation that’s both funky and floaty, like Bowie’s Space Oddity beamed through a funhouse mirror.

Zachary’s vocal delivery is playful yet pointed. His tone swings between tongue-in-cheek commentary and sly warning as he sings, “Getting tired of waste production, we need to do it some other way” and “The ozone layer is really melting, we’ve got to run before we burn.” It’s climate anxiety turned into cosmic satire, a smirk hiding a sigh.

And then there’s the chorus, that spiraling countdown“5, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… let’s hope we don’t fall in line”. It’s catchy but unsettling, echoing the robotic precision of the systems he’s criticizing. You can almost visualize humanity queuing up to leave Earth, clutching its bad habits and fossil fuels like carry-on luggage.

There’s also this brilliant phrase “Don’t forget to parallelize.” It’s bizarre, brainy, and perfectly Mason. It sounds like a programming command and a life lesson rolled into one: stay aware, stay adaptable, don’t blindly follow.

By the end, as the countdown loops one last time, you’re left both amused and uneasy. It’s that rare kind of song that cracks a joke while quietly breaking your heart.
