Gordon Osei Marfo, the Headmaster of Sunyani Senior High School (SHS), has offered advice to parents and guardians of students taking the 2023 West African Senior High School Examination (WASSCE) to stay composed.
Marfo mentioned that a sense of tranquility and regularity has been reinstated in the school, with all the exam candidates proceeding with their tests without any new issues arising.
On Wednesday, August 30, there was chaos at the school around 9:00 PM when some of the WASSCE candidates engaged in disruptive behavior on the premises. These students, mainly boys, wielded offensive objects to express their dissatisfaction with certain decisions made by the school authorities, which they believed were overly stringent and contrary to their interests.

The majority of the protesters were among the 500 candidates who were assigned to take the examination in the school’s assembly hall. According to the school administration, this decision was made to prevent examination misconduct. However, the candidates felt that this decision was harsh and insisted on taking the exam in the regular classrooms alongside their peers, rather than in the assembly hall.
Some of these students recorded videos of their actions, which subsequently spread widely on social media.

During a visit to the school by the GNA, Marfo described the incident as regrettable but assured that the school authorities had resolved the matter, and things had returned to normal. The candidates were now taking their exams in a peaceful environment.
He further explained that the school’s decision to have candidates take the examination in the assembly hall was a directive from the Regional Education Directorate. In total, there were 1,495 candidates writing the examination on the school campus.
