Bank staff arrested for stealing more than GH¢1.2million from customers’ accounts

A contract staff member at a prominent Ghanaian bank, whose name has been withheld, has been arrested by security agencies for allegedly stealing approximately GH¢1.2 million from customers’ bank accounts.

Over the course of two months, the accused individual managed to transfer the aforementioned amount from various customer accounts at a branch of the bank located in Osu, Accra. Among the victims were a deceased former Inspector General of Police and a deceased judge.

The stolen funds were reportedly used by the accused for personal expenses, including purchasing an iPhone 14 Pro Max and a Toyota Camry vehicle. Some of the money was also moved to the accused’s account in another bank, as well as the accounts of 17 accomplices in different banks and mobile money accounts.

With intentions to abscond to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates alongside his girlfriend, the accused had purchased an airplane ticket. However, security agencies acted swiftly and apprehended him at Kotoka International Airport on June 4, 2023.

The 25-year-old suspect, Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie, has been brought before court and remanded in custody. He is facing charges of theft, conspiracy, forgery of documents, and falsification of accounts, while his accomplices have been granted bail. Eleven other suspected accomplices are currently evading arrest.

The accused allegedly accessed his boss’s password by secretly filming her entering it with a mobile phone. This enabled him to carry out the fraudulent transactions. The Head of Fraud Detection and Operations at the bank filed the complaint against him.

The investigation revealed that in addition to the stolen funds, the accused made unauthorized changes to contact numbers and initiated transfers from customers’ accounts without their knowledge.

The police continue to investigate the case, aiming to apprehend the remaining suspects and recover the proceeds of the crime. The accused is scheduled to appear in court on June 16, 2023, before Judge Ellen Ofei-Ayeh.
