A drink-driver who killed a mother while speeding home from a Christmas party on the wrong side of the road has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.

Solomon Amissah, 37, struck the victim, who was in her 30s, after leaving a party in Bracknell, Berkshire, in December 2022.

Dashcam footage shows Amissah entering a roundabout in the wrong direction.

He continued driving the wrong way on a dual carriageway, according to police, before colliding with a car containing a mother of three, who died from her injuries at the scene.

Amissah admitted to causing the woman’s death by dangerous driving, as well as driving over the limit and without insurance. He has now been sentenced to 11 years and six months in prison following a hearing at Reading Crown Court.

The court heard that shortly after 10 p.m. on December 17, 2022, Amissah left a Christmas party and got into his car despite being drunk. He then drove above the speed limit and on the wrong side of an A-road, against the flow of oncoming traffic.

Amissah entered a roundabout in the wrong direction and continued driving on the dual carriageway until he hit another car. The court was told that Amissah was arrested on the night of the crash but not charged with causing the woman’s death until February of this year.

Investigating officer Det Const Joy Jarvis, of Thames Valley Police, said Amissah had also been distracted by his mobile phone. She said: “This piece of driving was one of the most dangerous pieces of driving that I have investigated. Amissah, selfishly, got into his car after consuming so much alcohol that he was too intoxicated and impaired to drive and disregarded the safety of other road users.

“He drove along the wrong carriageway for almost a mile, intoxicated and distracted by his mobile phone. This sentencing demonstrates how it is totally unacceptable to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol and using your mobile phone. Our thoughts remain with the family of the victim.”

Amissah admitted to causing the woman’s death by dangerous driving, driving whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit and driving on a road without third-party insurance at Reading Crown Court on April 17. He has also been disqualified from driving for eight years, as well as being jailed. He will also have to pass an extended re-test in order to regain his license.
