The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has arrived in Ghana for her inaugural official visit to the country. Accompanying her are Abebie Selassie, Director of the Africa Department at the Fund, Stéphane Roudet, IMF Mission Chief for Ghana, and other officials.

During her visit, Georgieva will engage in discussions with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Minister of Finance Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, and Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison.
Among her scheduled activities, she will attend an Artificial Intelligence (AI) conference, jointly organized by the Ministry of Finance and the IMF, with the theme “AI as a Catalyst to Transform Economies in Sub-Saharan Africa,” on Monday, March 18, 2024.
Additionally, Georgieva will meet with selected Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and women’s groups.

Ghana secured a $3 billion IMF extended credit facility (ECF) in 2023, aimed at aiding the nation’s recovery efforts amidst challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and the geopolitical conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The three-year IMF program, now in its first year, has seen Ghana receive $1.2 billion in two payment tranches of $600 million each. Georgieva’s discussions with Ghanaian officials will focus on strengthening collaboration to ensure the successful implementation of Ghana’s IMF program.
