Justice Gertrude Araba Essaba Torkornoo has been officially inaugurated as the new Chief Justice of Ghana, succeeding Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah, who retired in May 2023. She becomes the third female Chief Justice in Ghana’s history, following Justice Georgina Theodore Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s nomination received parliamentary approval on June 7, 2023. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo conducted the swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House on June 12, 2023. The President expressed confidence in Justice Torkornoo’s leadership abilities and highlighted her more than 19 years of experience. He believed that her appointment as the 15th Chief Justice of Ghana was a natural choice.
President Akufo-Addo affirmed his commitment to fostering a strong working relationship between the judiciary and the executive, ensuring the consolidation of the rule of law in Ghana. The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including members of Parliament, government officials, legal practitioners, and representatives from different sectors of society.

“I want to assure Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo that just as I did with her predecessor, I will be a dependable and trustworthy partner of the Judiciary so that the Executive and the Judiciary can work together in the spirit of mutual respect to consolidate the tenets of good governance for the benefit of the Ghanaian people,” he said on Monday at the Jubilee House.”

In her response, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo pledged to modernize the Judiciary through the implementation of technology to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has previously served in the High Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court. She was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Akufo-Addo in 2019.
