Mattock wastes no time setting the tone for their upcoming album Daughters with “Lil’ Busted Fox,” released April 27, 2026. As a lead single, it does exactly what it needs to do, pull you in quick and leave something stuck in your head long after it ends. The first thing that stands out is the groove. It’s smooth but still carries a bit of edge, creating that balance between laid-back listening and something you can nod your head to without thinking twice. Everything feels locked in, the instrumentation, the pacing, the transitions. Nothing feels out of place.

The track leans into the messy side of love falling apart. Lines like “The thing you know when love runs cold” and “No coming back, no more dancing” paint a picture of a relationship hitting its final stretch. There’s a sense of acceptance in it, but also confusion, like realizing something’s over before you’re fully ready to admit it.

The repetition of “I need my love, goodbye you don’t” hits harder the more it loops. It’s simple, but it captures that uneven emotional split where one person is still holding on while the other has already checked out. That contrast gives the song its weight without making it feel heavy.

Then you’ve got the “la la la” sections, which might seem light on the surface but actually work in the track’s favor. They break up the tension and make the song more replayable, almost disguising the underlying message with something more melodic and easy to latch onto.

Knowing this track comes from longtime collaborators Casey Brandt, Jason Fletcher, John Ranta, and Jason Gambrell, it makes sense why everything feels so cohesive. There’s a natural chemistry here that you can hear without overanalyzing it. “Lil’ Busted Fox” is catchy, clean, and emotionally grounded without being overwhelming. It sets up Daughters in a strong way, if this is the starting point, the full project is definitely one to keep an eye on.
