Matthew Heller’s “When I’m With You” is a melodic indie rock track that explores the complicated relationship between loneliness, love and the need to feel wanted. Featured on Criticism, Judgement, Heartbreak and Peril, the song has a warm, straightforward sound that puts the songwriting front and centre without trying too hard to impress.

What I particularly like about this track is how the vocals blend with the instrumentation. The arrangement gives the vocal delivery room to breathe, allowing the words and melodies to work together naturally. There is an inviting quality to the sound, drawing from classic American songwriting while maintaining a contemporary indie rock identity.

The repeated line “When I’m with you, I feel loved” captures the comfort of finding someone who makes loneliness temporarily disappear. However, the song doesn’t present love as a perfect escape. Lines about feeling alone, losing control and struggling with personal flaws introduce a more complicated picture of intimacy. The singer wants connection, yet his words reveal the tensions and insecurities that can make relationships difficult.

That contrast gives the track its character. Beneath the accessible melody is someone wrestling with his own behaviour and the fear of being alone. The closing references to not wanting to be alone while drunk or on drugs add another layer of vulnerability, suggesting a search for companionship that goes beyond romance. “When I’m With You” is a nice track that rewards attention to both its sound and its imperfect, human perspective. Matthew Heller keeps things direct and melodic, delivering an indie rock song with enough emotional complexity to invite another listen.
