Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, has acknowledged the concerns expressed by Ghanaians whose SIM cards have been deactivated. Following the conclusion of the SIM card re-registration process on May 31, individuals who were unable to complete the procedure using their Ghana Card had their numbers deactivated. This has caused considerable frustration, particularly among those who have funds locked in their Mobile Money (MoMo) accounts.
During a parliamentary session on Thursday, June 8, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful reassured the public that the money held in MoMo accounts is not lost. She stated that affected subscribers who can provide a valid identification and fulfill the necessary requirements will be able to recover their funds. While these subscribers will temporarily be unable to engage in mobile-related financial activities, efforts are being made in collaboration with the Bank of Ghana to ensure that they can access their funds by presenting a valid ID and completing the required processes.

The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation also revealed that her department continues to urge the National Identification Authority (NIA) to support individuals in obtaining their Ghana cards for SIM card re-registration. It is important to note that over 8 million SIM cards have been deactivated, including the numbers of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, and the Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George.
