Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has acknowledged that there are notable discrepancies in the report concerning the stolen cash from her residence. She suggests that the information circulating in the public does not align with the facts stated in the original complaint filed for the case.
Breaking her silence on the matter during its first hearing at an Accra Circuit Court on Thursday, July 20, the former Member of Parliament for Bantama stated that she is taking steps to investigate the origins of these inconsistencies. She plans to provide a detailed response in the coming days.
The revelation in court that the Minister had large sums of money, including $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Cedis in her home, has sparked public outrage. Two house helps, Patience Botwe, 18, and Sarah Agyei, 30, were charged with stealing the money between July and October 2022. Both have been granted bail and are scheduled to reappear in court on Wednesday, August 2. Additionally, three other individuals, including the father of one of the house helps, were arrested by the police for benefiting from the stolen funds.
As a result of this incident, some political leaders are calling for the Minister to step aside. The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, is demanding immediate investigations into the matter. John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of his party, described the situation as “scandalous” and criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for not holding his ministers accountable in similar situations in the past.
