Joe Caruso returns with “Sole Survivor,” the second single leading into his 2026 debut album Tales from Two Cities, and it hits with that timeless, highway-ready rock spark he grew up on. Even with its upbeat drive, bright guitars, tight drums, a rhythm section that keeps everything moving, there’s this quiet sting sitting underneath the shine. The track follows a guy reflecting on a one-night stand that should’ve been nothing, yet somehow lives rent-free in his head. He plays it cool on the outside, but the lyrics betray him, especially when he hits that punchy hook: “I’m a soul survivor of a one-night stand.”

Caruso’s writing feels casual but sharp, almost like he’s thinking out loud while the band barrels forward behind him. He remembers the night “frame by frame,” but not her name, classic, chaotic, and very human. That blend of humor and sadness gives the song its edge.

What makes this single even more compelling is its place in Caruso’s origin story. He literally wrote chunks of this album on the road from DC to NYC, pulling off at rest stops to dump lyrics into his phone before they vanished. His influences, Pete Townshend, The Jayhawks, early Squeeze, peek through in flashes, but the voice is undeniably his.

If “7 Hours a Day” was his mission statement, “Sole Survivor” is the moment he admits he’s still figuring himself out. It’s catchy, honest, and built for fans of classic-leaning rock with something real inside it. This one’s going to stick.
