Zachary Mason’s “The Funky Martians” is a wildly imaginative ride through intergalactic absurdity, equal parts War of the Worlds and Parliament-Funkadelic fever dream. Released July 25th as the second track and lead-in to his upcoming EP 5…4…3…2…1…, the single blends Space Rock, Psychedelia, and Experimental Rock into a uniquely humorous (and strangely catchy) space oddity.

The plot? A human colony touches down on Mars and gets confronted by hostile Martians, until a lucky accident triggers a radio and, boom: the Martians start vibing to funky music instead of vaporizing Earthlings. It’s delightfully bonkers, but underneath the silliness is a brilliantly constructed track.

Backed by Nate Barnes (Rose Hill Drive) on drums and John Thomasson (Little Big Town) on bass, the rhythm section grooves hard, grounding the cosmic chaos with genuine musical chops. Zachary’s vocal performance, filtered through quirky effects to portray colonists, Martians, and the narrator, is charmingly theatrical, giving the song a mini-radio-drama feel.

Guitar FX, tight funk basslines, and space-age textures make “The Funky Martians” feel like an alien funk jam you didn’t know you needed. It’s a trip, it’s a bop, and it’s Zachary Mason doing what he does best, making the weird feel wonderful.
