Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has downplayed the report by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) that predicts the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win the 2024 general elections due to Ghana’s economic struggles. Ahiagbah claimed that the current global economic challenges were caused by various problems rather than government mismanagement. In his words, “Even Jesus or Prophet Mohammed will not be able to manage the country’s economic challenge stemming from the said difficulties.” He further stated that no economic savior could survive the global economic challenges and that the NPP was not responsible for the economic difficulties experienced by Ghanaians.

According to Ahiagbah, Ghana’s economic challenges are threefold: the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the global economic recession. He argued that these issues were not caused by the government and that the EIU report was in line with the NDC’s propaganda over the years. Ahiagbah explained that Ghana’s economy is import-driven, and therefore, it would be difficult to survive some of the shocks experienced.
On the other hand, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, an aide to former President John Dramani Mahama and NDC’s parliamentary hopeful for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese Constituency in the Central Region, maintained that the NPP did not deserve to be retained in government and should be removed for mismanaging the economy.
