Skit maker, Cute Abiola faces prosecution for portraying Police in bad light

Abdulgafar Abiola, popularly known as Cute Abiola, a former Naval officer and Skit Maker, has faced criticism from the Nigeria Police force due to what they perceive as disrespectful portrayals of the police uniform in his comedic performances.

According to the Nigerian Police Force’s Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, two of Cute Abiola’s recent skits, which were posted on his social media accounts on July 20 and 24, 2023, depicted the police uniform in a derogatory manner. This portrayal is considered a violation of Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law.

As a result, an investigation into Cute Abiola’s actions is underway, and he could face prosecution. The Nigerian Police had previously warned skit makers and filmmakers against disrespecting their uniform or any related elements.

The police spokesperson said “the skits in question show a highly disrespectful and derogatory portrayal of the police uniform, an action that is in direct violation of Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law. Cute Abiola will be investigated and possibly prosecuted for his deliberate acts as the NPF had already warned skit makers and filmmakers to desist from desecrating its uniform or accoutrements.”

Adejobi exhorted “ members of the public, including media personalities, to exercise their freedom of expression responsibly and avoid engaging in actions that could erode public trust in our revered law enforcement institutions.”

Adejobi called upon the public, including media personalities, to exercise their freedom of expression responsibly and refrain from actions that could undermine public trust in law enforcement institutions.

The Police Force is dedicated to preserving the honor of its uniform and will utilize all legal means to hold accountable anyone or anything that attempts to defame the uniform or the institution it represents.

It is worth noting that Cute Abiola left the Nigerian Navy in November of the previous year to focus on his comedy career. During his departure, he acknowledged that his time in the Navy played a significant role in instilling the discipline necessary for his success in life.
