Processor EnhancementsThe S8 chip in the Apple Watch Series 8 is the same as the S7 chip in the Apple Watch Series 7, which performed similarly to the S6 chip in the Apple Watch Series 6. The Apple Watch processor hasn’t seen any significant advancements in a few years, so we could see an updated S9 chip with minor performance enhancements.
BluetoothApple adds Bluetooth 5.3 to the Apple Watch Ultra, and it could be expanded to the Series 9 in 2023. Apple has gradually updated its product assortment to include the most recent Bluetooth standard.

Battery Life
Any processor update could potentially result in minor battery life improvements, but we are not expecting big changes. Apple might also leverage the increased efficiency for greater always-on display functionality or other feature enhancements.

Is There a New Apple Watch Ultra?
As of 2022, the Apple Watch Ultra is a new product in the Apple Watch portfolio, thus we don’t know if it will be upgraded on a yearly basis.
We haven’t heard anything about a 2023 Apple Watch Ultra, but there are specifics on a 2024 model, so Apple may wait till 2024 to update the device. Is There a New Apple Watch SE? Apple has not generally upgraded the Apple Watch SE on an annual basis, and there is no word about a 2023 refresh. The SE was last modified in 2022, thus it is quite unlikely.
Future FunctionsWe don’t have much to look forward to with the Apple Watch Series 9, but there are certain upcoming technologies that Apple will incorporate into the Apple Watch that will lead to more exciting updates in the future. MicroLED Display – Apple is said to be implementing microLED technology for the Apple Watch as early as 2024, employing custom displays designed in-house, similar to how the company performs chip designs. The microLED display will most likely be used in a high-end Apple Watch, most likely the Apple Watch Ultra. MicroLED technology will enable brighter and more brilliant colors, as well as better viewing angles.
Apple Watch Ultra with a larger display – Apple is working on a new version of the Apple Watch Ultra with a larger 2.1-inch display, which could coincide with the move to microLED. Noninvasive Blood Glucose Monitoring – For years, Apple has been working on a noninvasive blood glucose monitoring function for the Apple Watch, and the concept is now functional, viable, and ready to be used in a future Apple Watch with some refinement. Noninvasive blood glucose monitoring is still years away, but when it arrives, it will be one of the most significant additions to the Apple Watch.
Date of Launch
Apple upgrades the Apple Watch every year alongside new iPhone models, so we should expect an announcement in September, followed by a launch a week or two later.
